I woke up the next morning, sore in all the right places, my body exhausted in the best of ways. When I rolled over, I noticed the bed was empty. Relief and disappointment battled for my top feeling as I touched his pillow, noting that it was cold. Iâd allowed myself to get caught up in the moment last night, and Iâd enjoyed every second of it, but the harsh light of a new day had a way of erasing all that. It reminded me that I had just ended a three-year relationship and should be in some state of mourning, not in bed with someone else. The switch that had shut off in my mind had definitely been turned back on.
Sitting up, I tucked the covers under my arms and ran a hand through my hair just as a knock on the door startled me. It started to open, and I almost screamed to housekeeping that I was inside and naked, but Jaseâs head appeared instead.
âI borrowed your key.â He waved it around as he walked through the door, balancing a bag and a crate of coffees.
He hadnât left me during the middle of the night, like Iâd thought. The jerk had gone out for food and caffeine, still wearing the same clothes heâd worn at dinner.
A part of me hated how thoughtful and romantic he was. Mostly because I knew there was no point to his kind gestures. Weâd never see each other again. But maybe that was what made it all so easyâno expectations. Jase seemed perfect because he only had to maintain the illusion for a few days, not a lifetime, like real relationships.
He set up the food and coffee on a tray and placed it on top of the bed before settling back in next to me.
âYouâre a god,â I said as I reached for the coffee and took a tentative sip. There was nothing more awful than burning your mouth.
âIâve heard worse.â He sipped his own drink before taking a muffin and tearing at it, handing half to me. âSo, Val, is this how you imagined spending your time in Vail?â
I almost choked. âUm, no. I definitely didnât plan on meeting anyone while I was here.â
âIs that a good or bad thing?â Jase was fishing for a compliment. Or maybe he was simply trying to read my emotions, but I wasnât giving in.
âStill deciding,â I teased.
âHarsh.â
âJoking,â I said, a little uncomfortable. âBut really, I figured Iâd be alone and soul-searchingâor whatever people are supposed to do after a breakup. You know what I mean?â
He nodded. âI know what society says youâre supposed to do. But I donât think thereâs a handbook every person should follow. We all heal in different ways.â
I smiled. âI know youâre just trying to make me feel better.â
âIâm really not.â He finished off his half of the muffin before reaching into the bag and pulling out a croissant. âCan I ask you something?â
âOf course.â
âDo you feel guilty?â
Shaking my head, I swallowed hard.
